OCC Field Leader HIKE
This 2 day course offers a systematic approach to planning and managing a hiking activity for one day. Students will be required to read a 60 page manual and complete attached quizzes before attending the course. Course length is 16 hours. Graduates of the FL (Hiking) course are qualified to lead one day trips into class 1 hiking terrain as defined in the Outdoor Council of Canada's Matrices. The scope of practice for the FL (Hiking) graduate can be found Here.
Day 1: Classroom course work in an indoor or outdoor venue depending on weather and conditions. We'll be reviewing and engaging with the provided Student Manual and working through practical exercises to reinforce principles and components of OCC and utilizing the OCC curriculum to prepare participants for leading in a day event context.
Day 2: Field training on trail. Participants will prepare their trip plans for the hike as “homework” the night before, and will be expected to “guide” the group, when/where indicated by the instructor. Testing will occur throughout Day 2 and at the end of the course.
PLEASE NOTE: Prior to the course, participants will receive the OCC Student Manual and will be expected to read through the manual and complete the quizzes prior to participation in the course.
