Certification Course
Course Details
This Outdoor Council of Canada 2 day course offers a systematic approach to planning and managing a paddling and/or a hiking activity for one day. Prior to the course, it is recommended that students obtain a technical paddling certification from another organization. Students must read a 80 page manual and complete attached quizzes. Course length is 20 hours. Graduates of the FL (Paddling and Hiking) course are qualified to lead one day trips into class 1 paddling environments and class 1 hiking terrain as defined in the OCC's Matrices. Course Schedule
Day 1: Classroom course work in an indoor or outdoor venue depending on weather and conditions. We'll be reviewing and engaging with the provided Student Manual and working through practical exercises to reinforce principles and components of OCC and utilizing the OCC curriculum to prepare participants for leading in a day event context.
Day 2: Field training on trail. Participants will prepare their trip plans for the hike as “homework” the night before, and will be expected to “guide” the group, when/where indicated by the instructor. We will be paddling on a local sheltered waterway. Testing will occur throughout Day 2 and at the end of the course.
PLEASE NOTE: Prior to the course, participants will receive the OCC Student Manual and will be expected to read through the manual and complete the quizzes prior to participation in the course.
Cancellation Policy
We operate our courses rain or shine, UNLESS our guide(s) deem it unsafe due to lightning or heavy rains and/or unsafe water conditions such as high waves or strong winds. We typically adjust the course to remain safe. We MAY cancel tours due to low enrolment if we have less than 4 participants.
In light of this, any cancelations initiated by Wilderland Adventure Co. will be fully refunded.
Cancelations initiated by participants are subject to the following terms:
1. Cancelations made more than 21 days in advance of the tour start date are fully refundable.
2. Cancellations made 21 to 14 days in advance of the course start date will forfeit a $25 cancellation fee, and will receive refund of remaining balance paid.
3. Cancellations made less than 14 days in advance of the course start date will forfeit any balance payments made.
